Chloe Kim Talks Winning Two Gold Medals and Honoring Her Parents

At 21-years-old, most of us were rushing to any bar we could find to enjoy our first legal cocktail, but two-time Olympic gold medalist, Chloe Kim, is out there making history. At 21-years-old, most of us were rushing to any bar we could find to enjoy our first legal cocktail, but two-time Olympic gold medalist, Chloe Kim, is out there making history. During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, Kim became the first woman to win two gold medals from snowboarding on the halfpipe.

"It honestly doesn't feel real, I'm still processing it," she tells InStyle over the phone. "I wish I could go back and fully relive it."

She doesn't take full credit for her win, though. When talking about what it takes to become a two-time Olympic gold medalist, Kim credits her parents, too. As the child of two South Korean immigrants, she understands the sacrifice they've made to help her achieve her dreams.

"I'm so grateful for them — I feel like this is the least I could do for how much they've done for me. It pushes me to work harder than ever before," she says. "They're my world, and whenever I accomplish something, I'm like, 'You guys did this, we did this — it's not just me.'"

Kim's deep appreciation for her parents is what led her to partner with Procter & Gamble to produce its "Always There" campaign, in which she pays tribute to them.

And being in Asia (although not South Korea in specific) for the Olympics only makes this more of a full circle moment.

"It's such an honor, and to be able to do something I love and bring more attention to my community is very important to me," she says. "It makes me so happy knowing there's an Asian American girl out there, looking up to me, wanting to try their best and work hard to make those dreams come true. It makes me happy knowing that I can be that person for her."

Sports aside, embracing beauty trends is something else Kim knows a thing or two about. Recently, "slut strands," aka taking two pieces of hair out of your helmet to have them frame your face, have been trending on TikTok thanks to female snowboarders — and Kim has thoughts.

"We need to change the name to beauty strands," she says. "I hate the term. Beauty strands make me feel beautiful, and it's such a cute thing."

She also loves a good eye makeup look — that's why her lash extensions and eyeliner always look so on point. Her secret? Washing her lashes every day and using an oil-free liquid eyeliner.

"I use a gel cleanser and a fluffy, soft eyeshadow brush," she shares. I'll get [the brush] all soapy on my hand and then put them on my lashes, rinse it off, and brush them." When they start falling off, Kim says she wears mascara to make sure they don't "look too crazy" before going in for a new set.

As for the eyeliner, "it's not waterproof, but it stays on," she explains.

Being in frigid temperatures also means her hair and skin are prone to dryness. So Kim's beauty regimen is all about replenishing moisture. "In China, it was -8 degrees, and I'm from California so my skin is like, 'No, that's not going to happen,'" she laughs. To combat the cold, she used Olay's Regenerist Night Recovery Cream while competing. "It brings my face back to life," she explains.

As for hair, she requires something extra nourishing as well.

"I bleach my hair so much that I need something to bring my hair back to life." The pro athlete revels she goes for the Pantene Generation Full and Vibrant Shampoo and Conditioner, which she calls her holy grail.
